Penang Second Crossing Bridge

Project data

Location: Penang, Malaysia

RM3 billion Penang Second Bridge is built under a co-operative programme between China and Malaysia and it expected to turn the island into a key logistic and transportation hub.  It will link from Batu Maung on the island to Batu Kawan and Seberang Prai on the mainland.  China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd. (CHEC) and United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) were awarded to design and build this 23.5km bridge termed the "Marine Bridge" with dual two traffic lanes carriageway across the bay.

Requirements

  • to construct 2 main plyons and the Piers
  • The plyons resemble H-shape concrete towers.
  • Upper pylons above deck level are designed as 3m x 4m uniform sections
  • Pylons below deck level vary from 5m x6m to 3m x 6m.

Customer

CHEC Construction Sdn Bhd

Customer's benefit

  • Easy to assemble and extremely easy to handle.
  • With the use of PERI's systems, the cranes were free for other purposes.
  • With the help of the RCS climbing device, all four pylons were climbed at the same time.
  • Achieved the casting of 4.50m height in every 6 days.

Mr. Zhou Yongjun
Section 4, Project Manager

PERI systems are extremely fast, the handling is easy and so are the installation and operation.  When facing any problem, the technical team is on-site immdiately. I would use PERI systems again for a new bridge and go further in the partnership in the initial stage. As for the PERI Plywood, we are happy with the durability and finishes. The surface is smooth as a lady's face.

PERI solution

  • PERI VARIO GT 24 with RCS C hydraulic self-climbing systems are used at the 2 main plyons (25 and 26)
  • PERI GT 24 with CB 160 as a crane climbing system for its 2 transition, piers 24 and 27.
  • PERI RCS Self-xlimbing hydraulic system was installed at a later stage to speed up the job and to make work much easier.
